Kurumac

Kurumac (“Cool Mac”) is a Japanese-Western fusion cafe serving light and homey all-day meals reminiscent of those family-run joints in Japan. Located in Marrickville, Sydney, they have an array of options perfect for weekend get-togethers.

We visited in early June as a big group of 6 with no prior reservation. We waited for 1 hour, spending the wait time chatting and getting a coffee from Coffee Alchemy and Eat St. Depot HERE down the street 😊☕

Food

This assorted sashimi seafood, sushi rice, miso soup for $25 was the most awed dish of the lot as our group drooled at the variety and different colours of seafood. Our friend said everything was fresh, executed well in a simple don concept.
Our other friend said the nori ben – crumbed yellowtail, mackarel, grilled salmon, pickles, nori, miso soup for $17 was a generous serving of fish that she (a girl who deadlifts 160 kg and eats a lot of protein) could barely finish. The batter was nice and light; not oily at all. She found the salmon quite dry and wished it was poached a little longer.

Yeaah, you read that right. She deadlifts 160 kg 😲🏋🏻‍♂️
We got the IG famous Japanese style white toast with kombu butter to share between the six of us because we were saving room for a Marrickville pork roll HERE but man, regrets not getting more of this $6 toast. THIS WAS DA B O M B 🤤. It was a crispy bread with a light, airy butter that was oozing with umami flavour. We would definitely come back for this.
Mick ordered the ox tongue curry, koshihikari rice, salad for $18. It was a flavourful curry that had absorbed all the juices from the tenderized ox tongue pieces. He was surprised to find bits of fat cuts in there too. This reminded him of Japan; it was just missing a side of shredded cabbage like CocoCurry 😆.
I ordered the mixed vegetable tempura, green tea soba for $18. There was a moderate green tea flavour and clean taste from the broth. The only issue was the tempura. In their mission to make the batter light, they skimped out on the batter itself, leaving a scarce amount of flour to cover the moistened vegetables. The tempura sauce was also missing, which was much needed to cut through everything.

Drink

Just a matcha and soy cappuccino: nothing spectacular. Simple and rejuvanting.

Service

The service was average. They were focused on being fast so there was not much interaction with the staff. They did move fast for 3 servers.

Review

Overall, we enjoyed our lunch. We probably would not return anytime soon, except for one of those toasted sandwiches as a takeaway 😍. The main reason is the queue time. We’ve been told the wait could be 30 minutes for only 2 people. Otherwise, not bad for a simple, Japanese-fusion cafe.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating! 🍜
