Hokkyokusei

The first omurice created in Japan was at Hokkyokusei in 1922! Since then, the Osaka restaurant has franchised out to dozens of locations throughout Japan, with many restaurants influenced by the omelette-rice dish. The original restaurant stands uniquely, with its traditional Japanese home-style, in modern Amerika-Mura streets of Shinsaibashi, Osaka.

We got the chance to eat here today, during the peak of the Covid outbreak. There was no queue because there were very little tourists in Japan right now, but there were other locals dining inside.
Like most traditional restaurants, we had to remove our shoes and put them into a secured locker. Afterwards, we were led to our secluded room with a chabudai (small table) and a hole underneath where we could fit our legs into the ground. This is our preferred way of sitting as traditional chabudai leaves our legs feeling numb 😂.
All the omurice we ordered looked the same but their fillings were different. This was a classic beef omurice. The sauce was a savoury and peppery gravy, drowning the tender slices of beef in its deliciousness. The egg encased the buttery and cheesy rice in its warm cuddle. And the egg was this fluffy and light layer of goodness. It was such a comfort food to eat on that cold, rainy night in Osaka.

Review

The restaurant was very tourist-friendly with English menus. It was very easy for us to order. We loved the little zen garden in the middle of the restaurant too.

Ok thanks for skimming past this quick post. Happy eating! 😋
