The Savoy Hotel on Little Collins

We stayed at the Savoy Hotel on Little Collins from Boxing Day till New Years Day, reserved through Bookings.com. The lobby was gorgeous with vintage gold and royal blue colours, a grand piano, chandeliers, connected bar and fresh flowers. They have a 4.2-star rating.

Disclosure: We want to share our hotel experiences with details and honesty since there is a lot of sponsored/fake content out there. Also, we might re-book a place and this helps us remember where we stayed ๐Ÿ˜‚. Our photos were taken on our Sony RX100V and we did not use a wide-angle lens.

Location

This hotel is located on Little Collins street. It was very convenient to travel to Melbourne CBD central, with Southern Cross Station and South Melbourne Light Station only a minute walk away.

Our main mode of transport was the free tram zone, Aaron’s Toyota 86 or our legs (walking took 10-15 minutes to Chinatown). It was a little difficult catching an uber and getting dropped off by car because the street was so busy but as a tourist, it was not that bad.

There was a Milksha around the corner (4 minute walk) ๐Ÿ˜.

Room

We had an issue on our first day. We booked a room with a bathtub however upon arrival, we were given a twin room with a shower. We brought it up with the reception staff and they informed us none of the bathtub-rooms was available, despite showing them our confirmation and payment ๐Ÿคจ.

They seemed reluctant to provide the room we had booked for but after a good few minutes of ‘let us check the system’, they told us one of the bathtub-rooms would be ready the next day at 3PM. We went from the twin room to the king room.
Bed: The bed was a moderately firm king-sized mattress. It was comfortable but not great after sleeping on it for a week. Our lower backs started to ache.

Cleanliness: House cleaning was offered every day however we only used it every second day. We noticed they weren’t really cleaning the toilets with a solution; simply a brush and flush ๐Ÿ˜•.

Noise: We had the inner facing window so we always had to make sure our curtains were closed (because we enjoy walking around naked LOL) but if the TV was not on, we could hear people using the elevator and walking past our door.
Air-conditioning: This was well ventilated and great for the Australian summer.

Technology: The wifi was a little slow so we relied on our 5G. I really enjoyed the broody light setting of the bathroom. It was perfect with our baths.
Space: The left photo was from the twin room where we barely had space to leave our large suitcase open. When compared with the photos above, the king room had:

  • a separate desk + chair
  • a tall lounge chair + coffee table
  • and additional space for our luggage to stay open on the floor ๐Ÿคฏ.
Bathroom: Yes, we had a bath every single night because that was what we paid for ๐Ÿ˜‚. The lighting was perfect for our 15 minutes of relaxing time. The toilet started to smell after day 3 because, as we said, the staff were only brushing it clean and were not using any toilet cleaner to chemically rid of the germs.

Amenities: We didn’t really use the bar or restaurant because it was pricey. They don’t have any other amenities.

Review

We would not stay here again.

The price was pricey for an average hotel, especially considering their cleaning technique. We felt we could have paid a few dollars more and gotten a better room and better service at a higher-end hotel. Overall it was moderately ok. We recommend it for travellers on a budget but not for couples having a staycation.

Thanks for reading ๐Ÿ˜Š
