Dopa by Devon: Truffle Menu

We were lucky to squeeze in one last truffle fusion meal for 2020 at Dopa by Devon. If you’ve read our blog or seen our eat page, you’d know we have dined at this restaurant before, around the time of their opening (LINK).

On this faithful night, we were meeting up with friends for wholesome truffle don bowls but it turned into unexpected rowdiness at Sanctuary Hotel πŸ‘€ Whoops! IYKYK 😜 Thanks for a good night, A & J.

P.S. Sorry for the low-quality photos. I only took a few shots so my friends could enjoy the hot meal they paid for. Ain’t no try-hard IG foodie πŸ™…

entrΓ©e

For entrees, we ordered the premium wagyu beef tongue for $22. This was scrumptious with chewy textures and savoury flavours. The scallions added a refreshing mild onion flavour to cut through the meat. The only downside was the price because there were only 7 pieces.
We also got the agedashi tofu for $7.50. This was well-loved around the table. Everyone kept coming back for this soft, jiggly piece of bean curd. The fried layer became soggy over time but the silken tofu still retained its firmness. The sauce was a combination of dashi, shoyu and mirin, which was mild and enjoyable.

main course

This was a scrambled egg rice bowl with furikake for $9.50. It was a tad spicy for my basic palate, thanks to the infused furikake in the egg. The egg’s texture was very gooey and soft. There was some kewpie mayonnaise between the egg and rice so one bite was rich and loaded. The green onions helped a little but yeah, furikake was slightly too much for me.

Mick said it was a simple, non-memorable dish. This was actually the last bowl to be eaten because everyone was over it.
We ordered the ultimate rice bowl v2 for $46 but not gonna lie, the last version was a little better.

This bowl (2020) had wagyu beef, beef tongue, foie gras and onsen egg with shaved truffles. It was very similar to the last bowl (2019) but I felt like the added truffle jacked up the price by so much; from $35 to $46 πŸ€”

There was a lot going on with some intense elements but the foie gras was the overwhelming flavour. The truffle flavour was mild. We noticed they used wagyu slices instead of the wagyu steak in the latest version so that was a tad disappointing in regards to value.

Overall, the taste was delicious but our wallets were crying.
The was a special tuna don with truffle and egg yolk for $42. The presentation was beautiful with the delicate egg yolk and green tobiko. The tuna were thick cuts and chilled, with a mild taste. When combined with the yolk and truffle, it resulted in a very creamy and delicious bite. We really liked this bowl 😍.
This was the wagyu beef MBS 6-7 rice bowl with ginger shallot sauce for $22. There were strips of medium-rare wagyu with roasted seaweed and an onsen egg. It was simple and yummy, like a premium bowl of rice. The meat was tender, the seaweed added texture, and the egg was soft and creamy.

The portion was reasonable for the price. It cost $5 extra to upgrade the quality of wagyu to the MBS7-9. We would definitely return for this don.

dessert

For desserts, we ordered the truffle tiramisu for $16. This portion was tiny for the value of money but I guess the hype of truffle is is to be blamed for that.

It was actually nice mixing the pungent savoury taste with the sweet caramel dessert. The truffle had a slight sugar coating so it was not overpowering at all. The tiramisu was bold with strong espresso and wine flavours. The biscuit layer and crumbs helped dull and blend everything together. It was a great, creative dessert πŸ˜‹.

service

The service was still amazing so it was great to see that has not changed. They catered to our big group with Covid restrictions. We even ordered 7 sakes to share between us so we were starting to get a little rowdy 😳 Thanks for accommodating, Dopa staff!

review

We still think the portions and value for don bowls are better than Monkey’s Corner (LINK); just don’t get suck into the truffle hype 😝.

Thanks for reading and happy eating!
