La Pedrera

Casa Mila, aka La Pedrera, is a historical stone quarry designed by architect Antonio Gaudi and occupied by the Mila family from 1912. It was amazing to see this “natural” looking construction emerge amongst the modern corporate buildings.

We booked the 10 AM tour for today. Like any tour, you get a headphone set to use throughout the building to learn the history of Gaudi. After collecting our headphones (you don’t need to drop off your belongings), we were led to the elevator where they took us up to the top floor.
The architecture was fascinating to stare at! Unfortunately, there was not much else to see because of construction. There were fences running all along the roof. It was not as crowded as google pics shows because we were one of the first groups in. We soaked in the sunlight and took a few snaps before heading down.
The first floor was the attic, with dim lighting, a wood smell and contained a lot of displays of Gaudi’s work. To get to the next floor was a fire-escape stairway on the side.
The next floor down displayed the main rooms the Mila family inhabited. The most interesting ones were the children’s room and the kitchen. We found it odd that the corridors had high ceilings and could fit 4 people side by side, but then the rooms felt cramped with furniture.
The third floor had a few more display rooms, closed off sections and a theatre room with a video of Gaudi’s life on repeat. It was interesting to see the third floor merge with the ground floor by a steady slope, instead of having to use the side stairs again. The entire place made us feel like we were in a “nature” style castle. On the ground floor was the gift shop.
It was fascinating to see Gaudi’s work as the Casa Mila is one of his most visited location (after Sagrada Familia) but we would not go back. It was a nice item to tick off our bucket list but for 24€ per ticket, we’re happy to have seen the building once.
