Cerveceria Catalana

One of the best things to eat in Barcelona is tapas and one of the best places to go is Cerveceria Catalana, a restaurant with 4.5/5 star ratings from whooping 12,500 reviews. It was so good that we dined twice for last night’s dinner and today’s lunch.

Food

To start, this was the smoked salmon, fresh prawns, cream cheese and chives. The bite felt fattening with that thick cheese but the juiciness of the prawn cut through it.

This was the four cheeses pizza and it tasted like a staple margherita slice.

The white anchovies “andaluz style” tasted exactly how you’d expect it to taste: sour, acidic, with minimal mouth feel. It is not my kind of taste palate so 4/10 but Mick rated it an 8/10.

This was the grilled pork loin with cheese. I found the excessive oils too overwhelming for my taste. It felt very heavy and had a slimy mouthfeel, and this made it hard to swallow.

I don’t remember if this was a special or a tapas but we loved the freshness of these pipis. The vinaigrette really enhanced the ocean flavours.

Another item I cannot locate on the menu but I do remember these arancini balls were lit. The crust was finely crispy with a moderate amount of dough. The filling was savoury, (pork? we don’t remember) and the American cheese and tomato helped lighten the, otherwise, dry bite.

The paella is a famous Spanish cuisine, known for the stir-fried rice with seafood. In Spanish, paella means frying pan. cooked on a low temperature. This was a savoury and rich dish, with the sauce overfilling the bite of fresh scampi.

This was the grilled prawns and a great tapas. It was very simple and perfect. The prawns were fresh and juicy with that charred flavour.

The beef tenderloin with foie gras was so juicy and fatty 😍. Foie gras is the liver of an overfed duck and if you’ve had it, you’d know a huge chunk of it would be playing with boundaries. We really liked this dish because the crispy bread helped cut through the richness of this delectable, easy-to-find-in-Spain duck.

We’re not too sure what this was.. but it tasted like a greasy spoon of pasta without the carbs. We didn’t finish this one.

This was the shrimp ‘al ajillo’ and it was really nice, well seasoned, with fresh prawns.

We liked this chicken with cured ham croquettes. The Spanish people know how to incorporate pork in everything and this was well made 🤤. Creamy, savoury filling with the moderately doughy outer layer and a faint crispy bite.

This was grilled prawn on bread. The prawn pieces were succulent with this spicy paprika flavouring. The mayonnaise combined the crispy bread and the umami flavours.

The Spanish omelette was a bit plain and dry for our liking. Nothing really spectacular to say.

dessert

By this point, we were drunk off our sangria 😂. The fruit mango mousse was light, fresh and not overly sweet.

A classic to try everywhere, the crème brûlée was light, well balanced and the sugary shell was not too thick. It was so good.

Rated: 11 / 10 😍

Service

The service was exceptional. We only had to wait 15 mins during peak hour for a table and even after we ordered, it felt like no wait because we were chugging down on our litre of sangria 😂 (I guess that’s how they get you hehe).

Review

Overall, we loved both occasions we dined at this restaurant and we would highly recommend it to our family and friends. We found the large selection to choose from really fun because it meant, as tourists, we could try different styles and variables of dishes from Barcelona without overindulging ourselves. The service was amazing.

Happy eating!
