El Segundo Sol

We were told Mexican food in America was the best so one of our first meals was to get our hands on some tacos. El Segundo Sol was our choice for the night because it was only a 11 minute walk from the Trump hotel. We got a reservation 3 hours before dinner.

Food

The guacamole was freshly made, with dell rey farms avocados for $13.95USD. The portion was huge! We still couldn’t get over the size for value of the dishes at this point.

The tortilla chips were roasted, with a nice crisp bite. The salsa was light, with a punch of tomato and subtle heat. The guac was smooth and thick, with a mild avocado taste and bits of sweetness from the diced tomatoes. Compared to Australia, it was one of the best salsas and guacamole we’ve had.
This was esquites, a grilled corn with chipotle crema, chile powder and cotija cheese for $6USD. We liked that they plucked all the corn but there was something off about the flavour. It wasn’t sweet or flavourful, just a dull corn kernel. The accompanied ingredients were nice, but without a true corn flavour, there was little they could enhance.
This was the beef birra taco platter, with birria beef broth, pickled red onions and salsa macha for $24.95USD. The birria sauce had a strong beefy flavour with an oily mouthfeel. The beef was tender but on the drier side. The taco was soft and fresh. I know this was an average taco by Mexican standards but still one of the better tacos we’ve tasted at this point in time.

Service

The staff were friendly but service was a little slow.

Review

This was an above average dining spot. For the price, it was a great restaurant with spacious layouts, delicious food and good vibes but in terms of if we would return, the answer is probably not.

Happy eating!
