Pepper Lunch

If you’ve heard of Pepper Lunch then you’re a lucky fella because you’ve been graced with the beauty of sizzling, juicy meat. Pepper Lunch is a major Japanese franchise, specializing in “fast steaks”. The idea is customers are served their raw food on a hot plate that cooks their food for them without a chef.

Sydney has a few locations of Pepper Lunch. We’ve been eating at this restaurant for years but the game changed when we tried it in its home country, Japan.
The franchise has expanded with dozens of menu options but I always get the classic beef on rice as it always hit the perfect spot for me. The beef is tender, savoury and well seasoned. After a few minutes of hot sizzles, the meat is cooked along with the rice, corn and spring onions. Add the sweet sauce and voilà, a simple and delicious meal.
This store is located in Akihabara, next to the taiyaki shop!

The reason we love eating Pepper Lunch in Japan is the value! In Australia, the average plate starts from $15. In Japan, you can get the deluxe beef option with A5 wagyu beef and upgrade your portion for ¥1000. If our currency was not so crap, that would be equivalent to $18.

The beef in Japan hits better too. We’ve been told most countries purchase their beef from Australia but that must mean all our top-notch quality meats are being exported and we’re left with the so-so quality in the country 🤔
I wanted to write a post about Pepper Lunch because this franchise and dish gives me so much joy and brings back my fondest memories of drunken nights and wholesome weekends. If you ever visit Japan, give the original restaurant a try.

Thanks for reading! Happy eating! 😄
