Koi Desserts Bar 2021

We had a dilemma with this dinner. The only must-eat thing on A&T’s list for their Sydney visit was to eat the Golden Snitch. And then a week before their arrival, Reynold announced the closure of Koi and we were left stressing over a dessert 😂.

Luckiily no one eats out on a Thursday so we were able to move our reservation. This was the set menu in May for $95 per person. The snitch was an extra $30.

Set Menu

We started with snacks; on the left was the parmesan pepper tuile. This was a very delicate bite that crumbled in our hands. It was cold, with a strong bitter, cheesy taste. We weren’t a fan of it because savoury desserts are not our thing but the presentation was intricate.
The other snack was the mochi donut with potato, cheese and truffle. This was like eating a soft cloud. After biting into it, there was a burst of heat and a strong punch of mush cheesy potato. It had a mellow taste, elevated by the aromatic truffle slice. This was a savoury snack we could get behind.

We thought there would be more snacks but I guess 2 does count as snacks 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️
The Two’s a Pear was so beautifully presented, with a hard nashi pear shell and refreshing mirabelle plum matcha filling. This was an enjoyable light-tasting dessert however other than their presentation, there was nothing gastronomically amazing about it.
The Snickers Tart was a rich and filling milk chocolate bite with a bitter coffee aftertaste that was surprisingly not as enjoyable as we thought. The hazelnut flavour was subtle, overwhelmed by the chocolate and peanuts. And the vanilla ice cream did not do much to cut through the richness. Overall this was a bit disappointing 😥.
This Jetlag was presented in a ceramic bonsai pot that started a meme in our group chat 😆. It was feijoa, jasmine, green tea, lemon myrtle, apple and yoghurt. The feijoa tasted like guava, slightly sweet with a bitter aftertaste. It was infused with the hardened ice cream at the bottom of the bowl. The apple was mildly sour and the lemon myrtle was overpowering, despite the small portion. This was a hit and miss among our group as some bites were bland, some were bitter and some were sour. Maybe we needed to mix it more…🤔.
The last of the set menu was the Cortinarius: a blackberry, plum bitters, long pepper and earl grey dessert. This was delicious, with a nice earl grey flavour. However, once we mixed it, the chocolate flavour overpowered the earl grey. The crunchy mushroom was a fun texture to eat. There was also hints of tartness and peanut. We enjoyed the theatrics of the chocolate pour at the start however by the end of the dish, we thought it was a bit heavy and sickening. I think half of us couldn’t finish it 😅.
Lastly, we had the famous Golden Snitch, known for its appearance on MasterChef ✨. This was a tonka bean, brown butter, pear, yuzu, and yoghurt dessert for an extra $30. Due to the hefty price tag, we got one to share between the four of us.

The brown butter ice cream was more creamy than ice, mixed with a rich peanut filling. It was a little overwhelming for our liking. The white nitrogen ice flakes were a spectacular touch. It didn’t really have a flavour, just tasted light and cold. For presentation, this was one of the most beautiful desserts we’ve had but for taste, it kinda fell off the wagon 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Service

When Reynold announced the closure of his Chippendale location, he stated his staff would contact all upcoming reservations and move them accordingly. We messaged their IG for information, as our booking was in 4 days from the announcement, and Koi ghosted us.. as in they saw the message and did not reply.

We ended up calling them 2 days beforehand and were told to cancel and move our reservations ourselves. It was kind of frustrating because we were told one thing, and stressing the whole time thinking they were full and therefore ignoring our reservation, when in fact, the staff were just lazy. Don’t make promises over the internet if you can’t deliver.

On the day of our meal, we booked the 8:30 PM timeslot and arrived 15 minutes early, as stated on their website, and other patrons were only halfway through their course. We didn’t get to sit down until 9:10 PM 😐.

We felt the staff were disorganised and lacking in customer service. This could have been due to the whole relocation announcement, or Covid, but it was strikingly different and crappy compared to our first visit in 2019 HERE.

Review

We used to promote Koi and talk highly of our 2019 dessert experience HERE but after this recent visit, with the jumbled staff and disappointing dishes, we’ll probably avoid the set menu for a while. We’ll still try their seasonal takeaway desserts because the effort in presentation and taste is still on point 😋 HERE.

Also, the price for this set menu was quite hefty for only 2 snacks and 4 desserts, compared to their old 2019 menu which included entrees and savoury dishes as well. Not a fan of this over-confident menu that did not deliver any spectacular desserts 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Thanks for reading & happy eating!
