January Treats

Ageing has really slowed our metabolism and after Melbourne (LINK), we both gained a bit of weight 😭. I’m going to start a new thing where I share our monthly treats because right now, we’re on a strict diet.

Our current diet plan is:

  • Intermittent fasting: daily 18+ hr fasts
  • Calorie counting and hitting our protein macros
  • Exercising 6 days a week
So far, we’ve managed to lose 3 kgs each without restricting what we eat and drink 😆. We’ll update at the end of February if this diet continues to work. Moving on to our January treats….

Koi Desserts

We shared these beautiful Koi desserts with J&J. Every single one was delicious 🤤

This first one had a delicate blue mousse shell with pineapple and vanilla creme filling, on top of a chocolate biscuit. It was mildly sweet with hints of acidity from the pineapple.
This was a raspberry and strawberry mousse cake with a textured shell. This dessert had a similar flavour profile as the previous but had more of a bland sweetness with the tiniest hints of tartness (raspberry).
This peach dessert was so cute 😍!! It had a textured skin with gradient colour spray. It was a peach mousse with Sudachi gel, white peach confit and longan. It tasted like a refreshing peach ice cream.
Our last dessert was a dark chocolate and coffee mousse. The golden twig was a thin piece of milk chocolate. This was more bitter, with only the slightest hints of sweetness. The cocoa powder on the outside made this a very textured bite. It was well balanced and a perfect end to a huge meal.

T's Bad Habits

Our friend likes to overindulge and buy a bunch of desserts, only to dump them all at our house because she’s on a diet 🙃 Bruhhhh, I’m on a diet too….

This was a Native Lamington from Bakers Flour Shop. It had a tart raspberry flavour on the outside, with soft cakey texture on the inside.
This was a durian lamington from Textbook Patisserie. The gold flakes were luxurious but added no taste to the bite. It was like eating paper 😂. The lamington itself had a moderately strong sweet durian aroma and flavour.
This was a lamington croissant from Textbook Patisseries as well. This was part of their Australia Day special. It was really good. The croissant pastry was flakey, covered generously in the coconut sprinkles. It was moderately sweet. After a few days in our fridge, it ended up tasting like an ordinary lamington 😂 #portioncontrol

Chololo

This was our monthly choice of FAT FEED. These were Birra tacos, overhyped on IG. Last Friday, after the gym, we waited 2 HOURS for this. The queue was absolutely ridiculous, snaking around and outside the building. They were supposed to be similar to the tacos in the U.S. but these were very disappointing.

We ordered one of everything:

  • Birra pack: 3 tacos + soup
  • Birra ramen pack: 3 tacos + ramen
  • One elotes
  • Four extra tacos

We thought the fillings were bland and dry. The soup, a thin consomme-like extract, was necessary to add the Mexican flavours to the bite. The taco shells were crispy but needed salt. The ramen was terrible: it tasted like dry instant noodles. And the elote (which took up 30 mins of our wait) was smothered with cheese and lacking in flavour.

Lucky we took it home so we could add our own pickled vegetables, jalapenos, cheese, seasoning and sauce to it. We got there at 7:15 PM and didn’t eat until 9:30 PM. We know now not to jump on an IG trend 🙁.

Smokin Aces Cocktail Bar

We booked out the bar one Sunday evening and ordered 3 of everything on their menu, including all their cocktails. Let’s just say it ended up being a blurry night with drunk me regretting my calories at the next gym session 🤣.

We loved the vibes at Smokin’ Aces. Everything tasted fresh and flavourful. Some of the cocktails were strong AF and hit the spot perfectly. Irene was a great host and really receptive to everyone’s feedback. We love that there’s such a cool place to hang in the area 💚.

Others

We also ate at Concrete Jungle (LINK) and Newmarket Restaurant (LINK). Just so you know, we’re not diving deep into chicken breasts and steamed vegetables. There are no restrictions, just portion control and exercise. We’re also trying to increase our lifting weights so cutting out food would be detrimental to our growth.

I’ll report back next month with our February treats and physical changes.

Until then, happy eating 😄.
