New Shanghai

New Shanghai in Ashfield, Sydney is our go-to Chinese restaurant whenever we have a craving for dumplings. Since 2015, we have been loyally eating at this place and every year I’ve redeemed their birthday voucher for free dumplings too (after a $30 minimum spend 😄).

P.S. This post was eaten in one sitting with our friend, A, the eating machine. The restaurant had to double-check three times to make sure we wanted 10 dishes for the three of us 🤣. Our dinner was enjoyed with a bottle of BYO white wine.

entrée

Our first dish was the Zha Jiang noodles for $12, consisting of dry noodles with ground pork and sweet bean sauce. This was the Chinese version and a lot lighter compared to the Korean version jajangmyeon. It was a mild savoury taste and very gentle on the tongue.
We have to eat our greens 😝. This was the sautéed string beans with dried shrimps and soy sauce for $16.80. It was delicious and refreshing with its umami coating.
This is a staple with all of our Chinese meals; sautéed snow pea shoots for $15. It was mildly salty and refreshing, cutting through all the pork oils.

main course

This was the braised beef brisket and tendon cooked in a clay pot for $22.80. It had savoury and tender beef pieces in a light and sweet sauce.
This was the wok fried king prawns with salted egg yolk for $29 🍤. The prawns were fresh and juicy. The salted egg yolk was almost creamy, with its mildly salty coating. It was very satisfying sucking on these babies. There was probably a lot of added MSG because it was addicting to eat.
These big dumplings are my favourite 😍. This was the pan fried pork buns, 8 pieces for $11.30. The dumpling wrapper was soft and thick. When I bite into it, the steam and pork juices seep out, filling my senses with its delicious aroma. The meat was tender and savoury. SO GOOD!
Every year New Shanghai have introduced truffle dumplings to their menu. This was the truffle pan fried pork buns. It tasted like the last lot but with added hints of pungent truffle to diffuse the savoury pork.
These truffle xiao long bao have truffle infused into the wrapper, creating this unique black colour. It was delicious with a strong truffle flavour. There was even a hidden piece of truffle inside with the juicy pork 🤤.
Yum, crab meat xiao long bao, 8 pieces for $13.60. These steamed bad boys were hot! Its soft wrapper was chewy and mushy, breaking away to reveal the freshly steamed savoury crab meat. It was really good! 🥟
This was the pork and chive dumplings, 12 pieces for $11. These were great with vinegar and soy sauce. The filling was juicy with a good ratio of chives to pork. The wrapper was chewy.
If you’re wondering if we finished our meal, we left with only 1 takeaway container 🤣.

service

The service has always been consistently efficient, getting patrons in under an hour wait and attending to all needs. The staff were friendly, catering to our BYO. And the dumplings are made fresh in the restaurant behind the glass window.

review

This was more of a dedication post because we absolutely love this restaurant. They have the most affordable and delicious dumplings in Sydney and we always leave with a food baby.

Thanks for reading! Happy eating 😝
