Tokki

Tokki is a contemporary Korean/Japanese izakaya restaurant. We went to a birthday dinner here at the Surry Hill’s establishment on Saturday and as a group of 15, we had to order their Feed Me menu for $75 per person. There were 8 dishes in total.

Feed Me

This plate of charred edamame was shared between 2-3 people. I found some of the charred pieces added no smokiness to the beans and left a burnt taste (the bad kind) in my mouth. They should have kept it simple with salt seasoning for maximum enjoyment.
This miso cucumber looked miserable but tasted really good 😋. It was simply sliced cucumber with thickened, sweet miso paste, balanced by the light creme dip and olive oil. This was shared between 2-3 people but they were a bit stingy on the quantity.
The kingfish ceviche was also another yummy dish but look at the pieces….😒. The kingfish was sliced thinly to the point of translucency, and each was the length of approximately 7-10cm. The flavour was good; a vinaigrette and yuzu sauce, with diced shallots and garlic, balanced by the mild squirt of avocado. This was shared between 2 people.
The concept of the pork belly bao was interesting. We had one bao and one skewer each.

These were succulent and fatty grilled pork belly pieces with a caramelized glaze, accompanied by fresh and earthy rocket, lettuce and coriander. They stuffed one piece into the soft, pillow-like bao and the rest were lazily skewered on a stick. Overall delicious but confusing.
This was average broccolini. It was stir fried with salt and sesame, which brought out the bitterness of the vegetable.
The yaki udon was a hefty serving size for 2 people. Underneath this layer of shredded snow cheese and seaweed was thick udon noodles stir-fried with a sweet soy sauce. They did not skimp out on the noodles but to be honest, this was their cheap method of filling up their patrons.
We chose the Tokki’s Korean fried chicken for our main dish. These chicken wings were juicy with a crispy fried batter, seasoned with a little salt and pepper. There wasn’t anything ‘Korean’ about this dish, other than the condiments of pickled radish, mayo and onions, and their sweet soy dipping sauce. It was very underwhelming in taste.
Our dessert was the matcha cheesecake. This was refreshing shaved matcha-flavoured ice and yuzu skin over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The matcha flavour was very subtle. It was a good finish to the meal.

Service

The service was good, especially considering our large group. They really sold us on the vibe of Tokki.

Review

Everyone thought the food was average, at best. The yakiudon and chicken wings did the job to make everyone full, but we were also drinking and the alcohol could have contributed to that too. The vibe was fun and great, service was decent. Overall only come here if everywhere else is full.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating! 😆
