Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant

The most beautiful gems are always hidden…. inside the most dangerous and dirtiest part of town. Located in downtown LA is this humble corner shop diner serving the best pastrami sandwich to ever come into existence.

We walked in at 11am on Thursday and got a booth immediately as a couple however the queue started building up around 11:30 so we highly recommend getting there early!

Food

STOP EVERYTHING AND GO GET THIS PASTRAMI SANDWICH! This was the most succulent, flavourful, heavenly sandwich we have ever had to touch our taste buds 😍. The world-famous number 19 was a delicious pastrami with Swiss cheese, coleslaw and a slice of pickle.

It was a very generous portion – half a sandwich per person was more than enough. The pastrami was savoury and tender, balanced by the refreshing coleslaw and sharp soft cheese. The bread was soft and chewy. Every element came together perfectly and we would do anything to get this sandwich in Sydney.
The pancakes were also to die for. We have been missing out with our crappy dry cardboard.

This was a HUGEEE piece – although we’re told this is the standard over here 😂. The batter was lightly egg-y in taste; with a soft and fluffy texture. Cutting into this was almost like cutting into a pillow. And the added honey sweetened our mornings.

Service

It was so odd stepping into this diner because it felt like time had stopped inside. When we looked outside the windows, we could see the boarded-up shops, the carts and tents, and the hundreds of run down cars and Americans (unfortunately the grim of reality). And then we would turn our heads to our food, to the servers, to the kitchen and BAM back to 1966.

The service was exactly how we had seen it on TV – immediate and free refills, helpful and sweet servers, and the nicest Americans we’ve encountered on this entire trip. The food arrived in a timely manner.

Review

We will definitely return so you should give it a taste too.
Thanks for reading! Happy eating.
