Hủ Tiếu Gõ Ông Mập is a Vietnamese restaurant in Footscray, Melbourne. They serve an array of dishes (their name translates to Hủ Tiếu fat man) but they gained popularity for their snails.
Food
This was bắp xào for $12. We thought the buttery fried corn lacked a bit of butter, so it became bland.
The gỏi chân gà ngó sen was $30. It was a boneless chicken feet lotus root salad. The fish sauce was bland, it tasted like they poured the sauce straight from the bottle when every Vietnamese knows you need to cook it over a stove for the best taste. And there was just too much onions in this salad.
This was New Zealand Snails cooked in tamarind sauce for $30. It was delicious but the snails were not the freshest.
This was spotted babylon snails in salted egg sauce for $30. This was creamy and sweet. It was a bit sickening to finish towards the end.
This was a classic sò lông nướng mỡ hành, grilled clams with spring onion. It was aromatic and delicious. $30.
Service
The service was standard for a Vietnamese restaurant. We dined on a weekend around 3pm so there were heaps of tables that remained uncleared due to lack of staff.
Review
We liked the variety of snails but overall we found the taste a bit bland. We will return for snails only.
