Steer Dining Room 2020

We felt boujee and wanted a fine dining experience to end the year. Dinner by Heston was closed and Nobu was booked out 🥺 so we asked a few locals for their recommendation and were directed to Steer.

Steer Dining Room is a modern steakhouse in South Yarra, serving premium wagyu, pasture and grain-fed beef from across the country. Aaron joined us for dinner.
The staff presented our steaks for the night. The top-left corner was the Kobe Full Blood Wagyu, and going clockwise was the Sher F1 Wagyu, the Pasture Fed Black Angus and finally in the bottom-left corner was the Jack’s Creek Full Blood Wagyu 🐄.

Entrée

To start our fancy dinner, the staple bread and butter arrived with this pinch of nectarine and chicken crumpet. The sourdough was airy with a soft, crunchy crust. The butter was mild and creamy. The embellishment was such a delicious add-on. It was another soft crunch with savoury chicken notes and the refreshing sweetness of the nectarine 👌🏻.
Despite our cravings, we only ordered 2 each of the natural oysters with lemon and mignonette because of the price tag ($5 each) and plain seasoning 🤷🏻‍♀️. The oysters were dense and creamy. It was an enjoyable delicacy.
We ordered the Sher F1 Tenderloin tataki, pickled vegetables, Tasmanian wasabi for $25. These were delicious, thin slices of tender Wagyu, lightly seared and well paired with the ponzu and wasabi combination. The accompanied pieces were a mix and match of radish, grape, perilla and ginger to help cleanse the palate.
We also got the aburi kingfish with mandarin, ponzu, dashi, ginger jam and wild fennel for $27. This bite was a burst of umami, salt and ginger sweetness. The kingfish was mild and lean in taste, with the seared skin adding depth of flavour. It was a great entrée, served with a beautiful presentation 😋.

Main Course

We went all out on the steak. The boys ordered 300g of Sher F1 Wagyu and Jack’s Creek Full Blood Wagyu for about $100 each.

My boujee ass ordered the Kobe Full Blood Wagyu, porterhouse A5 cut 100g for $160 🤑. This was joined with a béarnaise sauce on the side.

HOLY MACARONI, I WANNA EAT BEEF LIKE THIS FOREVER 🤤. The intertwined layers of muscle and fat striations were wrapped in perfect harmony so every bite of this steak was compacted with flavour. Regardless of where I chewed, the seeped juices coated the inside of my mouth, creating this enclosed haven of deliciousness. The wagyu was tender. The outer layer was cooked flawlessly. Every bite was rich and scrumptious. This would have to be one of the finest steaks I’ve had the pleasure to devour.

Side

We ordered four side dishes: onion rings and rosemary salt, hand-cut steak chips, mashed potato (DO NOT ORDER THIS 🚫) and stir-fried gai lan, broccolini and snow peas at $10 each.
These onion rings with rosemary salt were delish! 😍 The batter was light, crispy and salted evenly. The onion ring was sweet and juicy. I had about five of these bad boys because they were just so good. Highly recommend.
When we first tasted this mashed potato, it was average, at best, but then Aaron convinced us to try the frozen mashed potato and holy shit…

Dude, this mashed potato tasted EXACTLY like the frozen Birds Eye Steam Fresh Potato Mash With Butter from Woolworths 😡!!!! (LINK)

We’re 100% certain the restaurant purchased the $4 instant version and turned it into a premium $10. Not only was the taste the same, but after 15 minutes, the mashed potato dried up and turned crumbly, exactly like what frozen mash would do 😱😡. We’ve never had this experience before at other restaurants.

If you decide to eat here, DO NOT GET THE MASH POTATO AS A SIDE DISH! 🚫
Our revelation with the mashed potato made it difficult to enjoy these hand cut steak chips. Our first impressions were that it was average too but after googling the mash, we realised these could have been frozen beer battered chips. Look at the shape 🤔🤔🤔.
We don’t recommend this as a side dish.
The last of the four was the stir fried greens of gai lan, broccolini and snow peas. It had a similar take to the Chinese bok choy and oyster sauce, often served at yum cha / dim sum. It was oily and salty and was not a great choice with our rich steaks because it made us feel fuller instead of cutting out the fattiness.

Dessert

We shared the dessert because the boys were bloated with beef. This was a strawberry mousse on vanilla creme with raspberries and chocolate. The mousse and creme were moderately rich and sweet, accented by the tart raspberries and mellowed out by the small chocolate balls.

Service

The service was attentive and just a little above average. They did check on us and inform us what was being served but it felt a little stiff and solemn. There was a point where we thought they had mixed up our steaks 😖. It was ok but not the best service we’ve witnessed from a fine dining restaurant.

Review

We loved the quality of steaks at Steer Dining however the price was a bit hefty for such a small portion of beef. We probably would not return because the restaurant has a specific theme and limited menu.

Do not get the mashed potatoes. But definitely buy the Birds Eye one if you come across it.

Thanks for reading! Happy eating! Moooo 🐂
