Trattoria Dall’oste

One of the famous delicacies of Florence, Italy is a 3-finger-thick T-bone steak 🥩.

After travelling from Rome to Florence today, our first meal was a meaty feast at Trattoria Dall’oste because Mick was craving a steak for his birthday.

This restaurant had a 4.6 rating from 3000+ reviews on google. Upon arriving, we were greeted with enthusiasm from the host and waiters. We were seated next to the fridge and damn, we drooled a little looking at the meat because we had been on an only-pasta diet for the past week.

Entrée

Uhh, I can’t find this item on the menu 😶 From memory, I think it was the fried potato gnocchi dipped in four-cheese sauce. The thin batter, slight crispiness texture, and soft gooey insides… we enjoyed this appetiser but we couldn’t finish it because of what else we had ordered.
The affettati Misto Toscano, a selection of Tuscan salumi. Thinly sliced and full of savoury flavour, this dish would have been great with some French cheese. There were so many options and so many slices to choose from that we were heavily breathing by the end of the entrées.

This may be the tortelli di patate alla crema di tartufo e funghi porcini, with potato Tortelli with truffle cream and porcini mushroom sauce. This was a great contrast in texture from the creamy sauce to the baked bread. The mushrooms were rich and soft (said, Mick). The truffle flavour was mild, not overwhelming but enough to show it was there.

Main course

This carb-heavy dish was the mezzemaniche con salsiccia di Chianina, burrata e Tartufo, or handmade pasta with Chianina sausage, burrata cheese and truffle. It was really creamy and rich in flavour. The pasta was so soft and delicate, we could taste the craftsmanship in each bite.
A salad to balance the meal 😆 Ya don’t make friends with salad.
The star of the show, the bistecca alla Fiorentina parte filetto scottona, otherwise known as the delicacy of Florence, the famous, grilled T-bone steak.

This was almost a solid 1.2 kg, with probably 600 g of meat and fat. Of course, we ordered it medium-rare because that is the only way to eat a steak. The marbling and colouring on the meat were exquisite 🤤. The grilled flavours provided a warm aroma and delicious touch. The juiciness of the fat had seeped into the meat and everything dissolved beautifully on our tongues. It was an impactful hit with a moderate amount of beefy flavour – quite different from Japanese Kobe and Australian Angus. This was worth breaking the diet for.

Service

The staff were very friendly, radiating a joyous vibe and making our experience really fun.

Review

To say we were stuffed is an understatement. We were unbuttoning our pants and sweating from the moment the affettati came out. This was a very satisfying feast to celebrate Mick’s birthday and we can’t wait to go back to Florence to eat again.

Thanks for looking. Happy eating! 😘
