Social Hideout

Social Hideout is the Instagrammable cafe of Sydney, as shown. With floral ceilings, decorative furniture and cute cutlery, they really did go all out for their customers in the aesthetics of the cafe. Food-wise, that was another story 😐.

We visited in December 2018 with our friends, Damo, Ally and their baby.

drink

This was the chocolate avocado shake and it tasted overwhelmingly of avocado so there was no wow factor there. It was like a bland, thickened avocado shake.
The matcha latte was nice however they used way to much matcha powder and you could taste the gritty feeling in your mouth after every sip. We didn’t bother finishing this one.
The taro latte and red velvet latte were sweet and just hit the spot.

food

This was the F45 granola bowl. Mick found the panna cotta too set, with an earthy taste to it. All the fruits and nuts balanced the sweetness, making it ideal for breakfast. The presentation was beautiful.
This was a red velvet croissant, unique to the Waterloo location. My friend had this and found the red velvet flavour of the croissant was masked by the other ingredients. He said it was very bland and tasted more like an ordinary croissant, not worth its price. The top piece was crunchy however the bottom was soft, having soaked in all the sauce and eggs. The pomegranate added a refreshing touch.
This was the classic avocado smash. I found the sourdough was a little tough and I had to use my fingers to tear the bread into pieces. The poached eggs were perfect – tbh, I have not had a bad one yet. The danish fetta was slightly overpowering. It was a very simple and filling dish.
This is the Frenchy, which was a nice mix of fruits on toast. The server did a great job presenting the caramelised banana. The toast was a little sweet with a nice crunch, but there was not much green tea flavour. Overall, my friend found the dish pretty and quite photo-worthy, but the taste did not live up to expectations.

service

The cafe did a great job accommodating to our group of 4 with a pram on a busy Saturday morning. We just wished the food had tasted better.

review

We are definitely suckers for Instagrammable places. Would we eat here again? Nope.
Would we recommend it to others? Maybe, with T&C.

Social Hideout rated 4/10 on the delicious food scale for us, in comparison to other places. Food aside, the Waterloo location was easy to find with lots of street parking.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating!
