Komatsu: Lockdown Special

Restaurants are open from Monday in Sydney so we’re super thrilled to be able to dress up, sit outside and eat good friggin’ food again 😆.

We ordered a $100 takeaway special from Komatsu today and omg, this meal made us thirsty for their official opening 💦👀. Komatsu is a new Japanese restaurant that opened in the newly built Bamboo Lane of Rhodes Central by sushi chef Jae Young Park (ex Sokyo). Boy, oh boy, we’re so glad this is around the corner from where we live because these boxes were delicious!

The lockdown special was $100 and we got: 10 pieces of sushi, 16 pieces of sashimi and a chirashi donburi.
For the sushi box, we got one imperador, scallop, tuna, grilled salmon, salmon, cuttlefish, and two whitefish and two kingfish. The ratio of rice to fish was just the way we like it – compacted soft rice half the size of the fish. Value 😍! All the seafood was fresh and creamy, making every bite (despite sharing half of every nigiri with each other) satisfying as fuck.

This sushi chef appreciates value because these sashimi cuts were PHATTT. The sashimi box had two pieces of tuna, salmon, salmon belly, kingfish, four pieces of white fish, three scallops and a juicy scampi. Originally a 14 piece feed but as this was the last weekend of lockdown, our chef was generous and added two extra pieces so THANK YOU 😏🤤.

This chirashi donburi had a wide variety of seafood, with unagi, tamago, salmon, tuna, white fish, kingfish, cuttlefish, steamed prawn, sprinkled with tobiko, ikura and seaweed 🤤🤤🤤. Everything was combined well so that every bite had an array of oceanic flavours. We loved that the rice was a moderate layer; not too overwhelming in the quantity that it masked any of the beautiful seafood flavours. We were so full by the end of it.

Review

We cannot wait for Komatsu to open officially. By the looks of their Instagram page, they might be doing omakase so you already know we’re making a reservation once their website is up and running.

Thanks for reading!
Get ready for more food reviews because we’re finally free to eat outside now 😆.
