Mamak

Every time we walk past Mamak, there are at least 14 people waiting in the queue. This is a famous Malaysian restaurant in the heart of Sydney CBD, known for its well-executed and delicious dishes. We’ve been here a few times but this is the first time I remembered to pull out the camera before I devoured my food 😝.
The purpose behind this food visit was to satisfy my sudden craving for roti. And Mamak hit the mark with their roti telur bawang for $10.50: a crispy yet soft flatbread. The eggs and onions elevated some bites with salty and/or sweet tones. Three dipping sauces were provided: sambas, a sweet and savoury curry, and a sweet chilli curry.
This is a classic Malaysian dish, maggi goreng for $16, a mee goreng variation with prawns, fish cake slices, fresh bean sprouts and an added fried egg. It was flavourful and well rounded, with a moderate umami taste and soft, chewy noodles. If you’re ever uncertain about what to try, this is the one. It tastes way better than the famous instant noodles ‘mi goreng’ hehe.
I was feeling brave and agreed to a sambal dang. This was stir-fried tiger prawns with fiery sambal sauce for $26. I cheated a little and removed most of the sauce, but otherwise, it was not that spicy 😮. It had a night tangy burn, balanced by the sweet and juicy flesh of the prawn. It went well with the soft white rice.

Service

The service was a little slow in noticing us trying to grab their attention, despite the emptier than usual restaurant, but we don’t really fault them for that because the servers appeared exhausted from their busy lunch rush. (We visited around 2:30pm).

Review

This is a great spot for a casual lunch. Keep in mind best times to avoid queues are outside of peak lunch and dinner hours so plan your day accordingly.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating 😁
