Golmokgil

Golmokgil is a Korean restaurant offering a vibrant spot for late night drinking in Melbourne CBD. We booked it because of its 4.8 out of 5 star google review, and we were dining with a child (so we couldn’t do a smokey KBBQ).

The booking system is automated, with 3 follow up emails when you request a reservation however if you change your booking and it gets rejected by the system, the restaurant will have no history of your initial reservation. It seems best to call to make a reservation rather than relying on their website.

We dined on a Friday night at 7pm and noticed they were heavily understaffed. We stayed til 10pm, with a child, due to service.

Food

This was the best dish of the night, tteokpokki for $24. There was so much rice cakes in this (our favourite piece) and the sauce was a delicious sweet and spicy flavour that paired well with the melted cheese. It was so enjoyable, everyone kept picking at it and it was the first dish to be licked clean.
We got the Korean snow-cheese fried chicken for $35. The batter was light and crispy, with the boneless chicken pieces being juicy. The snow cheese also had a hint of msg and sugar so it was a sweeter snow cheese than we’re used to. Nonetheless, really delicious.
We got the corn cheese for $16 for the child but I ended up eating it all lol. It was good when it was hot but there was a wet cheesy-water liquid that pooled up after 10-15 minutes.
The soft tofu soup $21 was soul-filling and delicious. It was on the sweeter end, with a good amount of protein.
This was a half-and-half seafood and kimchi pancake for $28. It was average. The dough was too thick and moist. There were no crispy parts to balance it. There was also not enough toppings in the pancakes, especially the kimchi side.
Finally this was the kimchi fried rice. It was good.

Service

The service was good but the chefs were SO SLOW! It took 30 minutes for our first dish to come out, and maybe another 20 minute for our last dish from the main order to come out. We ordered the kimchi-rice 45 minutes into the dining, and that took another hour lol. The servers looked like they hadn’t had a drink of water all night so they were probably understaffed on this Friday night.

We also snuck into the kitchen to get our own utensils because we couldn’t get a hold of anyone.

Review

The vibes were nice. This was as decent place, especially for no KBBQ because we had a child with us. It would not be our first choice for a restaurant next time, maybe if we ran out of options.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating.
