Sydney’s Mexican game sucks so we were genuinely surprised to find so many good food spots in Melbourne. La Tortilleria is a cute eatery in Kensington, serving one of the best fish tacos we’ve had. We dined on a Public Holiday and it was popping so we recommend making a reservation during peak dining periods.
Food
The guacamole was $5 and a tiny portion, but delicious. Avocados are expensive lol. It was crushed avocado, tomato, onion, coriander, green chile and lime. The salsa was diced well, and not too runny.
We got a side of nachos – just oven-baked tortilla chips.

We got 4 tacos to try and all were fantastic (6 total, got 2 birras and 2 pescado).
The tortillas were fresh and soft, like eating a cloud. This was their al pastor for $9, a free-range spiced pork, achiote, guajillo, chile, pineapple, and salsa roja. It was a our second favourite of the night.
The other taco featured was the birra, where we got 2 for $17.50. These were beef tacos, ancho chile, spices, onion and tomatillo salsa, with a classic “Consomé de Birria” (birria stock). It was rich and oily, delicious on its own but average when compared to the pastor or pescado.

Now the star of the night, the pescado $9 was a battered fish, jalapeño mayo, coleslaw, salad, onion and coriander mix taco. The fish was sooo crispy, fresh and juicy. It was such an amazing combination that highlighted both the protein and tortilla harmoniously.
This was a creme brulee cheesecake that was thick and average. It was too eggy.
Service
The space was tiny in the back but the service was fantastic for such a crowded space. We loved the aesthetics – definitely felt the culture once we stepped inside.
Review
We would return for tacos.
