Luke’s Banh Mi

This was a scam. As a Vietnamese, I’ve never seen a bakery weighing the banh mi twice before handing over their product to the customer. We went to try this hyped spot in Moonee Ponds, and it was $12 a roll.

Yes, the roll was filling but why does a cold-cut traditional “banh mi” have dried shallots in it? And their crackling pork was overpowered by their lemongrass marinate. Also, instead of cutting thin slices of meat and shredded pork fat, they cheated by cooking a huge pot of pork fat, freezing it so it was gelatinous and then cutting huge chunks into the baguette so it gave the same “fatty” mouthfeel that you would expect in a banh mi. Also, the pate and butter were very bland.

Finally, we waited 30 minutes on a Tuesday at 3pm – not even peak lunch time – for these two rolls. Such a scam. And we should have realised when the majority of the customers were WP (whtie people)- sorry but any Vietnamese person that claims this is the best banh mi in Melbourne is simply an uncultured swine to their own ethnicity/people.

We will not return.
