Benchwarmer is a cosy Japanese fusion bar in North Melbourne, with a wide varieties of sake and beer on tap. We were overwhelmed with choices (in a good way).
Food
The beef tataki was tender and flavorful, enhanced by the dashi soy glaze, crispy garlic, fresh shallots, chives, and a rich cured egg yolk. It was $20.
These white anchovies were sooo delicious. Two pieces for $15. It was white anchovy on a Binbin cracker, with wasabi verde, pickled cucumber and dill. The combination was an amazing all-rounder – our favourite dish of the night.
These kingfish tostada reminded us of LA. They were fresh, earthy and a touch of clean ocean. This was kingfish with crispy wonton skin, yuzu kosho ponzu, cucumber, onion and takana for $20.
The cucumber salad was light and refreshing, balanced with yuzu kosho ponzu, wakame, takana, whipped tofu, and sesame for $16.
The chicken katsu was incredibly juicy. Each piece was a thick cut, surrounded by an even spread of nama panko. The Japanese curry gravy and cabbage was also done perfectly, with the right seasoning and consistency. It was $25.
The Fillet O Fish was incredibly satisfying, with the crispy panko-crumbed rockling paired perfectly with the tangy takana tartare. The hi melt cheese and crunchy pickles added a rich, nostalgic touch that made each bite delicious. It was $15 each.
We couldn’t stop eating this rolled rice noodles for $18. There was something satisfying about the chewy softness of the rice noodles with the airy whipped cashew cream. It was also served with Grandma sauce, mushrooms, nori XO oil and pepita seeds.
The shio koji pork cheek was melt-in-your-mouth tender, elevated by the sweet heat of the gochujang glaze and the sharp kick of wasabi verde. Fresh herbs, a squeeze of lemon, and aonori added layers of brightness that made the dish exceptionally delicious. It was $25.
I didn’t take a photo but we also got the benchies fries for $13. These were heavily salted with Aonori salt, served with Benchies mayo. It made us really thirsty and itching for another beer haha.
Service
The service was great. And the pacing of the dishes were good too.
