Kowloon Stir Fry King

A new Hong Kong restaurant opened up in Sydney earlier this year and we finally had time to eat here, at the sister restaurant of Kowloon Cafe (LINK): Kowloon Stir Fry. This place had a hip aesthetic with neon lights, colourful retro designs and Asian condiments on display – exactly how Hong Kong looks.

We ate here on 6th November in a group of 5 so all dishes were shared amongst us.

To be honest, nothing stood out for us. All the dishes were flavourful, seasoned well and had a nice coating of vegetable oil. There were a lot of vegetables tossed in most of the dishes for filling, like bean sprout and garlic shoots. Our favourite was the stir-fried pipi dish. Otherwise, here are the photos of the dinner. I’ll only share individual reviews of the drinks.

Drinks

These Kowloon Yakult shots were adorable but a tad overhyped 🍼 They tasted exactly like a normal Yakult with a hint of soju. We were doubting the alcohol content in these but definitely enjoyed the sip. Overall we thought they were too pricey and would not pay for this again – $8.80 each or 6 for $42.80 ($7.13 ea).
This Vita lemon iced tea for $13.80 contained gin, vodka, tequila, rum and Cointreau. This was definitely a lot more enjoyable and felt worth the money. We knew it only tasted so good because of the amount of sugar in it (trying to be health-conscious here 🀑) but since we were already consuming alcohol.. ehh, might as well πŸ˜….

Food

HK style stir-fried Chinese chives with dried shrimp and squid – $26.80
Stir-fried razor clam with garlic black bean sauce – $36.80
Stir-fried Chinese leafy lettuce with black bean sauce – $18.80
XO sauce stir-fried pipi – $39.80, with extra Chinese donut for +$8
Braised pork with preserved vegetable pot – $26.80
Stir-fried wagyu beef with mushroom and Chinese chives – $26.80
Salty egg and pork patty claypot rice – $30.80
Salt and pepper squid – $26.80
Deep-fried chicken with lots of dried garlic and shallots – $26.80
Stir-fried rice noodles with beef – $18.80

Service

The service was a little slow for the drinks. It was moderately busy but they took a really long time to bring out our order. Otherwise, just a typical no-conversation fast Asian-style customer service.

Review

We enjoyed the vibes and the food overall but this is definitely just a pricier Chinese restaurant for us. We’d probably come back with friends who are interested but we will never suggest it first because none of the dishes was outstandingly amazing. It has a cool concept but we are all about gastronomy so we won’t be back until there is a full menu change. Until then, we will frequent over to their sister restaurant, Kowloon Cafe (LINK).

Thanks for reading. Happy eating πŸ˜„.
