Kisuke

We celebrated Mick’s birthday with a 18-course omakase at Kisuke in Potts Point. This was the spot where Osaka Bar used to be. It was very easy to book because they had a lot of avail abilities due to the looming recession. It was $225 per person.

I made a long-form video but got drunk halfway through so my mukbang is not the best 😂.

Omakase

We started off with an assorted appetizer dish. In clockwise order:
  • Japanese dashi with pickled vegetables (cucumber, carrots, daikon) in the yellow cup
  • Lightly boiled cuttlefish with miso paste and sesame
  • Succulent king prawn
  • Spanish mackerel marinated in soy, mirin, sake, and sugar
  • Puffer fish skin with salmon roe
This was a scampi chawanmushi roasted with steamed egg and dashi broth, finished with sea urchin from Japan.
This was shima aji, Japanese strip Jack – a white fish.
This was sliced beef marinated in sake, eaten with the sweetened part of miso paste. It tasted like Chinese sausage.
This was steamed New Zealand snapper fillet in ponzu sauce.
The nigiris of the night… It was a littel difficult to hear the Chef (as you will see in the video) so just know they were simple and delicious.
The main was a soba in dashi dish. We were hoping for a bigger protein-based dish but this was delicious, and does uphold to traditional Japanese omakase.
The dessert was a light yuzu ice cream and tea.

Service

Chef Morita was a soft spoken character. There was not much conversations going on but he was very informative of the ingredients and his cooking process. His wife was the only employee, serving patrons drinks and doing all the cleaning in the background.

Review

If you want to try an omakase and are having difficulties booking one of the other more-hyped spots, Kisuke is a great stepping stone to the Japanese world. There was some creativity and experimentation mixed in with the traditional elements of a typical omakase. And the price doesn’t hurt the wallet too much.

Would we return? At this point in time, no, because we have bills and so many other places to try out.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating!
