Getting Fat in Tokyo 2020

Last fortnight, we were very lucky to make it to Tokyo for a short holiday before the international lockdowns. On top of all the food we ate, like Kobe Beef (LINK) and the Sushi Kinoshita Omakase (LINK), we had a lot of snacks in between meals because we knew it would be a while before we got to experience this luxury again 😋.

It was a good thing our only mode of transport was walking and catching the train with our JR PASS LINK because we only came home slightly rounder 🤣.

7 Eleven

If you’ve visited Japan, you would know how friggin’ amazing this egg sandwich is!!! It costs ¥180 at any 7-eleven throughout Japan. The bread is super soft and fluffy, with the crust perfectly cut off. The egg is boiled, chopped up into pieces and then mixed in with its yolk in a creamy, milky paste. It’s such a delicious and light snack. The Family Mart version tastes very similar but is not the exact same. Go for the 7-eleven one! I had one every single day 😂

Rated: 10 / 10!!!!

KURIKOAN AKIHABARA

We stopped for this taiyaki in Akihabara. The outside was doughy and a little dry due to the thickness of the batter. The filling was red bean paste, made from sweetened Azuki beans. They do magikarp shaped taiyaki here too!

Rated: 7.5 / 10 for convenience.

FRENCH TOAST FINANCIER IVORISH

We got these cheese French toast from a French Toast Financier Ivorish event station and we were surprisingly disappointed. The cheese flavour was very artificial and overwhelmed the bite. The biscuit was soft, with a bread-like texture. It was an ok snack but we would not recommend or buy again. They didn’t even last the week as souvenirs to take home.

Creamia Ice Cream

CREAMIA IS LIT!!!! If you haven’t tried this yet, you have not lived. This ice cream is a mild and creamy vanilla scoop made from Hokkaido milk, drizzled into the softest and sturdiest waffle cone we have ever bitten into. THIS IS THE BOMB! We had one every day and our only regret was not getting more. We still dream about this baby.

And the best part about creamia is that it is now being sold in Excelsior Cafes! It used to be really hard to find back in 2017 but trust our fat, greedy asses, we found it anyways.

Rated: 10 / 10 and worth the extra gym sessions.

Pablo Cheesecake

We got the seasonal cherry blossom and chocolate cheese tart from Pablo Cheesecake. We love this franchise for its unique flavours. Our favourite was the spooky Halloween pumpkin flavour from 2017.

The top chocolate one had a refreshing raspberry flavour that cut through the richness of the marshmallow-choc goodness. The bottom sakura flavour was subtle and light. The flavour of sakura is like a mild floral flavour, for those who have never had it. We also got an original, which had a crumbly texture and a very light cheese flavour, as an aftertaste.

Gindaco

We stayed at Hotel Gracery Shinjuku (LINK) and I’m guilty of having a fresh batch of original takoyaki with mayo and chives every night. BEST MIDNIGHT SNACK 😍. You already know I’m hella biased when it comes to takoyaki, exhibit A: my review (LINK). Compared to those bad boys, I give Gindaco a rating of 8.5 / 10 but for convenience outside of Osaka, I give it a 10 / 10 because I’m a sucker for these octopus balls.

Rated: 9.1 overall

Milk

We spotted Milk, tucked away in a corner in one of the many exits of Shinjuku station. This was their original strawberry flavour. It tasted like fresh strawberries, not like the artificial kind. The texture was creamy and smooth with no harsh ice shards. I think they used fresh cream for their base too.

Rated: 9 / 10.

Baked

We have been trying to eat Bake for 3 years and finally, we ticked it off our bucket list. Bake cheesecake was different from Pablo’s; it was a lot more drier due to the baked nature of the tart. We loved how fresh and warm the tart felt in our mouths. The sakura flavour had a rich strawberry taste in addition to the mild sakura, with a smooth texture. The original had a moderate cheese flavour (more so than Pablo) with a creamier texture.

Rated: 9 / 10.

Ichiran

We consider Ichiran a snack because we’re fat-shits 😂 Look, you’ve probably seen this bowl on every corner of the internet so I’m not gonna bore you with a description. Just know that Ichiran now comes in instant noodle versions and it tastes very similar to the real thing. A packet of 5 for ¥2000.

Saizeriya

When Aaron pushed us into this basement franchise restaurant and told us this was the spot where locals love to hang out, we were sceptical. And then we had a taste of the pasta and holy crap, we wanna go back for more! 😍 Other than the delicious food, many Japanese people love Saizeriya because there are over 100 menu items, it’s cheap (¥500/plate) and there are unlimited drinks.
I’m so basic, I ordered a spaghetti bolognese. It was very light and sweet, with a watered-down tomato sauce. What made it tasted better than it looked was the sweet beef stew sticking to the soft pasta.

Rated: 7.5 / 10.
This rice and beef stew was eaten by Mick and it must’ve been good because he’s still talking about it months later.

Rated: 9 / 10.
Aaron got this beef ragu. It had a strong Asian beef taste, like the beef stock powder. It was more like a beefy stew than a ‘ragu’.

Rated: 8.5 / 10.

Tainohachi たい焼きたいのハ

This was a taiyaki pop up store in Shinjuku. I ordered a red bean paste taiyaki with vanilla ice cream again. The batter was thinner than the last one, making it a lot more enjoyable. The filling was sweet and creamy. The ice cream texture was a bit harsh; I could feel the ice pieces.

Xing Fu Tang

I said it before in our Harajuku post (LINK) and I’ll say it again. God dayum, XFT know what’s up with their brown sugar pearl milk tea. Japan uses Hokkaido milk instead of regular milk and this small difference is a game-changer. WOW! 😍 We had XFT and Gongcha every single day, sometimes twice a day.

Taiyaki Kanda Daruma Ueno

We were wandering Ueno for nostalgia when we stumbled upon this taiyaki store recommended by Mike Chen. I got another red bean paste taiyaki and oooft, this was delicious! I had to wait 10 minutes for a fresh one but it was worth it. The filling was creamy and mildly sweet, contrasting the hot crispy pastry. It was a very comforting bite.

Rated: 9.5 / 10.

Genki Sushi

Genki Sushi was the original sushi train to use robotic technology to deliver food. It’s not the cheapest sushi train in Japan but we love going back here anyways 😆 Most plates were ¥200. All the seafood was soooo fresh and delicious. I also loved this coconut icecream inside this cool “coconut” shell.

Rated: 9 / 10.
I realised a lot of these ratings are high but if you’ve visited Japan, you’ll understand why 🤣.

Thanks so much for reading! I wanted a separate food review post so as to not overwhelm our travel diary (LINK). Jaa-ne!
