Alegre

Alegre is a beautiful restaurant located in Sydney’s Darling harbour, serving memorable Mexican flavours with Australian native ingredients in a luxurious Caribbean ambiance. We dined here on a Sunday night and was quite surprised by how empty it was – we were able to walk in with no reservation. They had a live dj playing during dinner.

Food

The food was delicious, cooked well to proper technique. The serving size to price was slightly overvalued but it was to be expected for a restaurant in this prime location. Also inflation 😭. I didn’t take many pictures because we were eating with new people so one shot magic:

  • Roasted bone marrow w. Mexican beef tartare & jalapeño chimichurri, toasted sourdough bread for $25
  • Authentic wagyu beef birria, crispy mozzarella, fresh onion & coriander, salsa taquere, consommé for $16
  • Crispy soft shell crab, avocado cream, truffle oil, shallots, pico de gallo & Yucatecan aioli for $16
  • 300g Jack’s Creek sirloin MB4+, mole madre & fresh lime for $68
  • Chargrilled corn fed mulato chicken w. mole two ways & escabeche for $48
  • Achiote fire roasted lamb rack with roasted cauliflower puree, blistered jalapeño labneh & chilli ash – 4 rack for $44
  • Truffle mashed potatoes w. potato crisps & chives for $17

The highlight was the avocado and tequila cocktail! It was soooo good.

Service

The service was perfect, borderline “fine dining” style with a bit of casual wiggle room.

Review

We really liked Alegre. It offered something unique and a little different to Sydney’s food scene. If it wasn’t so pricey to eat out, we’d come back in a heartbeat. I was considering the private function rooms for an event so if you like the interior design, make a reservation 😝.

Thanks for reading! Happy eating.
