Naoshima Island, Japan 2019

I travelled 2 hours one-way to the famous Naoshima Island, located in Kagawa Prefecture today. This is my travel diary of this cold and gloomy day πŸ˜†.
This island is known for its art museums, architecture and sculptures scattered around the island. The hardest part of this day trip was the transport 😨.

I was staying in Okayama and started my journey from Omoto station.

  • Omoto station to Chayamachi station (18 mins) – JR line
  • Chayamachi station to Uno station (30 mins) – JR line
  • Uno station to Uno Port (5 mins) – walking
  • Uno Port to Naoshimako terminal (20 mins) – ferry
This was the first leg of the trip. I had a JR pass so most of the journey was free.

At Uno Port, there was a vending machine to purchase the ticket for the ferry. There were at least 30 people waiting to use this one machine. The ferry arrived and some people ended up missing the 11:15 ride due to this ticketing system. The ferries only arrive every 45 mins.
On the island, there were a few options to getting around, such as hiring a bike, hopping on the every-30-min bus, renting a car or walking. I hopped on the bus but my dumbass hopped off a stop too early and ended up walking around the island for 2 hours LOL πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Some of the museums located around the island include Chichu Art Museum, Lee Ufan Museum and Benesse House. Each of these has its own entry fee.
I opted out on entering any of the museums because the weather was predicting a thunderstorm and the last return ferry was scheduled for 3 PM. Most tourists come to stay overnight on Naoshima Island.

There were a few moments I was walking in the rain and thinking “this is it, this is how I’m going to get sick after travelling for 3 months” but I persevered and made it home to my warm hotel room in Okayama 🀭.
In all honesty, I would never do this again. It was exhausting travelling 5 hours for a return trip to an island where all I did was see pumpkins. It was fascinating but I don’t love art enough to see it again πŸ˜….

Thanks for reading.
