Godaime Hanayama Udon

We love it when a food spot lives up to the hype, especially in Japan. This is Godaime Hanayama Udon, specializing in flat udon noodles. This was the Nihonbashi location, which is easier to queue up for than the Ginza location.

It opens at 11:00 am. We got there at 10:28 am and we were the first in queue. At 10:40 am there were another 5 groups of people in queue. And by 11:00 am, the restaurant was at full capacity, with about 12 groups of people waiting for their turn.

Food

This was the recommended chicken broth antarctic curry dip for JPY 1,580. It was made with Akagi chicken (Gunma Prefecture) and their famous cold Oni Himokawa udon.

The udon was amazing! Each piece was incredibly tender and soft, and we could really taste the flavour of the wheat. The curry was spiced with a mild beefy flavour. It was heartwarming and delicious, but the udon definitely carried the dish.
We also got the mugibuta no kake for JPY 1300. This was Gunma Prefecture’s barley-fed pork with Oni Himo Kawa, spring onions, seaweed and an onsen egg. It has won competitions for 3 years in a row. This was creamy and sweet, served cold. It was delicious but since we had been standing outside in the windy cold weather for 30 minutes, we didn’t love this dish as much but had it been summer, it would have been a hit.
We needed something warm so we also got the Maitake tempura and two types of zaru udon for JPY 1,790. This was sooo comforting and delicious. The one with carrots and spinach had a deep umami taste that reached into our souls and warmed us up immediately. Again, the udon noodles were lit.

Review

We were so happy we were able to buy a few boxes to take home to Australia. These meal kits have been delicious and taste exactly like the udon in the restaurant. We would definitely return.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating!
