On the corner of West Melbourne, Kare Curry offers a comforting, vibrant taste of Japanese-style curry in a cosy setting.
Food
Starting off with the best dish, the mentai butter shio pan for $8.50. It was rich, fluffy, and bursting with savoury umami flavour. Unfortunately it was all downhill from here.
This was the tonkotsu chashu pan for $9.80. The noodle texture was interesting, but the meat was dry and flavourless.
Mick got the half and half curry for $25. He chose signature beef and keema pork. The beef was more enjoyable with a right amount of savouriness and umami. The pork lacked depth.
I got the nabeyaki curry udon for $27.90. This was hot pot katsuo dashi curry udon soup, with ebi-prawn kakiage tempura, raw egg, grilled spring onions, yaki-mochi and naruto. This was average. The curry flavour was mild, and tasted like the store-bought packet. The tempura batter was too thick and oily, making it feel like I was eating dough. It was the rare time I didn’t finish my meal.
This was the Japanese custard purin for $8. It was a smooth custard pudding with a bittersweet caramel sauce. The ratio was off, they needed to add a bit more caramel to balance the bite.
Drinks
The drinks were average. For $9 non-alcoholic and $17$ alcoholic, we felt it was a waste of money.
Service
The service was terrible. There was no one dining, and 3 servers standing around. They were quick to handle out food and clear our tables, but they didn’t direct us to where to order, or where to pay. They seemed too reliant on their QR code that they forgot what actual customer serivce was about.
