Bird Bang’n Chicken is a Instagram hyped bistro serving crispy fried chicken in Brunswick, Melbourne. We had it on our list prior to our move so we were very excited for this meal but alas, left feeling validated that not all hype is worth it.
Food
This was Southern Fried tenders, 3 for $28. It was free range brined chicken, dipped in buttermilk and coated in hot sauce. It came with creamy salw and pickles – our choice. The tenders were juicy, and the crust was crispy however compared to other fried chicken restaurant, it was simply delicious but average. The batter did not taste “Southern fried” enough. Also some parts of the chicken didn’t feel hot enough.
These mac & cheese croquettes were 3 for $15. Again, the batter was very crunchy but lacking in seasoning. The fillings was creamy but the mac and cheese was also lacking. It need a pinch of salt. And the croquettes relied heavily on the cream cheese topping, which was thick and overwhelming.
We also got a flight of wings for $29. This came with 4 wings of each flavour: hot buffalo, lemon pepper, smokey BBQ and Louisana cajun. The hot buffalo was standard and tasty. The lemon pepper seasoning was a tad too sour. The smokey BBQ was also straightforward. The Louisana cajun was the best seasoning, with more balance and complexity in the flavour. Otherwise all the wings were juicy upon initial bite but then the meat became a bit dry.
Service
The staff were friendly and great. The middle tables with bar stools was a bit too tiny for all the food we ordered, despite there only being two of us. They were not designed for dining patrons, more for drinking patrons. We were a walk-in though so we can’t blame them for the lack of seats.
Review
We thought the food was average. It’s not a bad spot for a big group needing a last minute booking but for us a a couple, we will not return.
