Taste of Berlin 2019

A few days ago, I took a big leap out of my comfort zone and travelled to Berlin, alone, as a small, female Asian. Unfortunately, this meant fewer food photos because my stomach is the size of an ant. I stayed in Berlin from Saturday to Monday and here are some of the meals I devoured.

Restaurant Maximilians Berlin

I had my first German dinner here and I absolutely loved the food and vibes. Full review in a separate post (LINK).

For lunch the next day, my tour group stopped in a quiet area of Berlin. They decided to eat at a Thai restaurant 🤔 so I separated and explored nearby restaurants.

I came across a 4.1 star rated pub and was going to eat there, however I experienced a rude waitress and perverted-staring men so I left. Realising I only had 35 mins left to eat before I had to meet my group, I stopped by this burger fast-food chain.

To be honest, the meal was very mediocre. I would have had a more enjoyable time had I gone to McDonalds. Live and learn, I guess.

RANDOM

I stopped by a cute little bakery for some sweets. This strawberry cake was sweet but not anything too mind blowing. The strawberries were not as fresh as they could be. The jelly was drying out. The bottom biscuit-and-cream layer was soft and mild.

Tigertörtchen

These were mini cupcakes from tigertörtchen. They were creamy and delicious and brought back my hopes in German food (lunch had been a tad disappointing). I got coffee and biscotti, chocolate creme, raspberry and chocolate, and passion fruit. They were well balanced, fresh and sweet, and went well with my cappuccino. The store has a 4.7-star rating on Google.

Zur Gerichtslaube

For dinner, I ducked into Zur Gerichtslaube. This is a cosy, basement restaurant, serving traditional German food, from soups to feasts. This was a hearty grilled Berlin-style sausage, on wine-flavoured sauerkraut with claret sauce and herb-flavoured potatoes for 9.90€.

The sausage had a thick, meaty inside, as it was steamed first then fried. The outer layer was crispy and salted. Europeans have really starchy potatoes compared to Australians so I was all for these delicious veggies.

The sauerkraut had a tart profile with a soft, almost watery texture. It’s hard to described but balanced the salt of the sausage and mildness of the potatoes well.
Thanks for reading. I can’t wait to go back to Germany with Mick so we can explore and eat everything 😆 Auf Wiedersehen!
