Kentaro has been heavily advertised on our Instagram feed as an affordable omakase for $50 for the past year so we finally dined during a weekday lunch. Luckily we did not get the omakase as our a la carte experience was average, and after reading Google reviews we felt valid for not being gyped into the experience (although we ended up spending $$$ anyways LOL 🤭). It’s a good spot if you’re a basic bitch.
Food
Mick is a bougee boy and ordered the A5 and Uni Box, a $188 set filled with “premium ingredient from the land and ocean”. It had 80g of A5 Ozaki steak, 80g of Hokkaido sea urchin, sliced truffle and salmon roe on top of their original blend white rice, served with seafood miso soup.
You can’t have too much of a good thing because it’s not enjoyable. When you mix all the expensive ingredients together, it takes away from each element. The wagyu was also not as tender as expected. This is really a set you get to flex – nothing spectacular gastronomically or amazing.
The server was a bit careless when handling and placing the dish down. Notes in “Service” below.

I ordered the Kaisen Chirashi Gozen, a $50 seasonal selection featuring six varieties of sashimi, made to be wrapped in seaweed or as a bowl. It arrived 35 minutes late. They really did forget my order because Mick’s dish came out in 5 minutes lol.
Speaking of the food, it was scallops, prawns, tuna, kingfish, salmon and snapper, on top of shredded fried egg (cold). The cuts were not really “sashimi” but the seafood were all fresh. It was good, and the extra sides made me feel very full. As you can see, I had the seafood miso soup, a miso soup, a tamagoyaki and some pickled salmon too. The point of the dish was a visual effect which they did achieve.

Service
The service was abysmmal. Considering it was their peak lunch rush, they seemed to have more staff standing around being clueless than anything else. There were about 4 floor staff for this restaurant of 30 seats, with 6 chefs and 2 managers? in the tiny space. This does not include the staff in the back kitchen.
We were able to get the manager’s attention to get our order, but when it came to waving his attention to notify him we were still waiting on my dish (35 minute wait), he saw us, then assigned his junior to deal with the problem even though they were helping another patron. It seemed unorganised and a power trip – so you can take our order but not deal with a problem?
Also the junior reached across me to place Mick’s food down (the most expensive item), didn’t even put it down properly and left without even giving us a simple “this dish is…”. The young gentleman who was our main server was fantastic.
