Mappen

Mappen is a small Japanese eatery in the heart of Sydney CBD serving authentic, conveyor-belt-style Japanese homey food. The best thing about this place, other than their delicious food, is that their prices have been reasonably the same over the past decade while their menu has expanded. They also have a sister store next door, serving don (rice) bowls.

A meal at mappen will cost about $10 per person, depending on size and choice.

Food

This has been my go-to order for 7 years. It is the regular, hot, bukkake ontama mentaiko with extra ontama. You can thank me later.
The broth is a concentrated dashi-based broth, elevated by the spice of the mentaiko. This is eaten with soft, cooked udon, seaweed pieces and katsuobushi (spices).

The best thing about this bowl is the 65Β° poached egg. When popped, the runny yolk oozes into the broth, mixing into this heavenly umami bite πŸ€€πŸ‘ŒπŸ». This bowl is only $5 too!
This is one of their newer dishes, a dragon ramen full of spice and meats. Mick said it was good but it doesn’t hit the Japanese cravings like Ichiran and Ippudo does. Every time we eat at Mappen, he tries a differnet dish but he says he always gravitates towards the original menu items, i.e. the bukkake πŸ˜‚.
After ordering our main bowl, we move along the conveyor belt to their hot dish selection full of tempuras, crochets and takoyaki! Each piece is about $1-$2. Then there’s a cold fridge for those wanting seaweed salad, corn, potato and even desserts (mochi, ice cream).

If you’re looking for a cheap place in Sydney for delicious food, stop by 537-551 George St and be blown away by the humbling experience πŸ˜‰.
