Margaret

After finding out Margaret was named No. 2 Best Steak Restaurant in the World, and No. 1 Best in Australia in 2025, we were excited for our return trip to Sydney. We were also keen for the burger from Cafe Margaret (next door) because they ranked higher than Charrd (LINK), but we were way too full to squeeze in that beef burger 😂.

We dined on a Wednesday at 6pm, making a reservation a fortnight beforehand. It was booked out and packed on the day.

ENTRÉE

It was a special occassion so we got the tartlet for $49 each. Each one contained 10g black pearl white sturgeon caviar. Divine 🤤.
This was a spicy Korean tartare for $34. It contained a handful of Pav and Heidi’s bigeye tuna with gochujang, sesame and pickles. The vegetables were cleaned and served in its most simplest form.

It was an underwhelming dish, definitely a tartare targeted towards white people’s basic chilli tolerance. We could appreciate the freshness of the fish but the sauce, flavour and texture was average.
Ok back on topic, this ravioli for $44 was lit! Each one was filled with lobster, drizzled in black vinegar and chilli oil. The ravioli was soooo thin and fresh. The sauce was a punch, and spicyyyy! The only sad thing about this dish was that there were 4 pieces, and only one out of three of us could get a second serving LOL
We ordered this after our steak had arrived, because we were still feeling peckish. This was the scallop crudo for $36. It was Flinders Island scallops with seablite, finger lime and karkalla. It was refreshing and light, and if we had ordered it from the start it would have made the dinner flowed better, but alas, eating it after a steak was not a good idea.
We also ordered this sashimi of Pav and Heidi’s Albacore tuna with avocado, nori, kombu and brown rice vinegar for $34. It was delicious, with a light umami flavour profile. Again, if this was ordered at the start, it would have been better. Who knew an 800g steak was not enough for 3 people.

Mains

This was the Jarrod’s King George whiting with lemon and Margaret x Cobram Estate Hojiblanca Extra Virgin Olive Oil for $79. It was simple and delicious, and probably one of the most freshest fishes we’ve eaten. But we don’t understand marine life enough to justify the cost, but can appreciate a perfect dish.

The salad had no dressing.
The prize of the night, the famous best steak in Australia: a 800g Dry-Aged David Blackmore pasture-fed Rohne sirloin for $290. We were given 5 options for sauces and only got 1-2 teaspoons.

Wow! The steak was incredible. It had a perfect layer of wood-fire charred crust, with the right tenderness of a medium rare steak. We could really appreciate the cow it came from but to be critical, it is simply a really good steak. Is it worth $290 hmmm…

If you don’t know how to cook steak like this at home then yes, this is the spot for your cravings but Mick’s steak are flawless on a weeknight for $30-$60 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ just saying we personally would not return for a steak.

Dessert

This toffee banana and pecan souffle pudding for $20 was amazing. It was the right balance of sweetness and nuttiness, with a fine crispy shell. And the creaminess and cold temperature of the icecream on top wrapped everything together into a perfect bite.
The creme caramel with malfroy honey for $20 was good, but not the winner here.
Our friend got this chocolate cupcake for her birthday. She never got back to me on its taste but I will assume it was rich and delicious (because it was free lol).

Service

As mentioned, we made a booking a fortnight in advance so we were under the impression it would be a moderately filled out dining time this Wednesday. NOPE. Rich white people love dining out. The restaurant was packed!

The service did their best to get everyone in once the doors opened, however the server assigned to us was a bit pushy at the start. He did improve about 30 minutes in with better charisma, flow and awareness so it could have simply been the “start of his shift”.

Otherwise observing the team work in the kitchen, and on the floor, was amazing. Credits to their team work. We also appreciated Neil getting involved and delivering good food, and not retiring completely from his passion.

Review

Our impressions of Margaret is that it indeed is a high-end steak restaurant, and considering its location, the prices make sense. Is it the best steak in Australia? It’s definitely up there but that award all comes down to individual tastes and wallets.

We would recommend going once to try it out but know that the bill may hurt if you’re not prepared. Despite this being our friend’s birthday, it was her third visit to Margaret 😂.

We want to go back to try the burger at Cafe Margaret. We will not return to Margaret. Thanks for reading. Happy eating!
